Svante Skogh dining table

This rare dining table, model Cortina, was designed by Svante Skogh and produced by Seffle Möbelfabrik in Sweden during the 1960s. Crafted from richly grained rosewood, the table features a round top that extends into an oval shape by inserting additional leaves. The veneer displays a striking radial pattern, with wood grain converging toward the center to form a symmetrical starburst motif. The precise craftsmanship emphasizes the depth and tonal variation inherent in the rosewood surface.

The table is supported by four tapering cylindrical legs that narrow gracefully toward the floor, creating a balanced and light silhouette. The apron integrates seamlessly with the tabletop, maintaining a continuous grain pattern whether the table is in its round or extended configuration. The leg-to-apron joints showcase the cabinetmaker’s skill in handling complex curves and smooth transitions.

Svante Skogh was known for his innovative and sculptural furniture designs during the mid-century, blending traditional Scandinavian woodworking techniques with modern, expressive aesthetics. Seffle Möbelfabrik was a respected Swedish manufacturer active during this period, recognized for producing high-quality furniture. Pieces from this collaboration are rare and collectible.

This table has been fully restored and is in excellent vintage condition. The surface has been carefully refinished to preserve the original character of the rosewood while enhancing its color and clarity. The extension mechanism operates smoothly, allowing easy adjustment between round and oval forms.

The table measures 118 cm in diameter and 73 cm in height when closed (approximately 46.5 by 28.7 inches). When fully extended, it reaches a length of 198 cm, or about 77.9 inches. The Cortina table exemplifies mid-century Scandinavian design through its harmonious synthesis of form, function, and materiality.
