Sven Wejsfelt floor vase
This large and unique ceramic floor vase was designed by Sven Wejsfelt and produced by Gustavsberg in Sweden in 1963. Crafted from high-fired stoneware, the vase features a relief decoration consisting of small, raised buds that cover its surface, providing a rich tactile quality. The glaze is a deep turquoise that gradually darkens toward the base, creating a gradient effect that enhances the textured relief and adds depth to the overall appearance.
The form of the vase is a classic elongated silhouette with a rounded body tapering into a flared neck and a slightly outward-curving rim. The combination of the sculptural surface texture and the glossy glaze results in a dynamic interplay of light and shadow, giving the piece an organic, almost botanical character. The design shows clear influences from Wejsfelt’s early work with Stig Lindberg in the 1960s, reflecting the Scandinavian modernist emphasis on balancing form and surface detail.
Sven Wejsfelt (1930–2009) was a prominent Swedish ceramicist who worked at Gustavsberg from 1953 to 1970. Initially trained as a turner under Stig Lindberg, Wejsfelt developed a distinct artistic style marked by intricate surface decoration and expressive glazing techniques. His works are celebrated for their craftsmanship and their connection to the organic, textural aesthetics characteristic of mid-century Scandinavian ceramics.
Gustavsberg, one of Sweden’s most important ceramic producers, was known for encouraging artistic innovation within its studio department. Wejsfelt’s vase continues the tradition of high-quality, handcrafted stoneware that distinguished Gustavsberg’s mid-20th-century production.
The vase is preserved in excellent condition, with no visible flaws or restorations. It measures 20 cm in diameter and 43 cm in height (7.9 by 16.9 inches). The base is marked with Wejsfelt’s signature alongside the Gustavsberg studio stamp, confirming its authenticity.
