Svend Ellekær stools

This is a rare set of three stools designed by Danish architect and furniture designer Svend Ellekær and produced by Christian Linneberg Møbelfabrik in Denmark in 1962. Each stool features a circular seat upholstered in black imitation leather and supported by a minimalist yet sculpturally refined rosewood frame. The seats have a subtly domed profile, contributing to both comfort and visual softness, while the frames are formed from solid rosewood with richly figured, dark-toned grain and elegant corner joinery. The legs curve inward slightly at the base, lending a sense of balance and lightness to the form.

The joinery is visually distinctive, incorporating precision-cut detailing where the legs meet the apron, with an inlaid strip or laminated contrast along the centerline of the vertical leg, highlighting the craftsmanship and attention to material integrity. The stools exhibit signs of age and use, including light surface patina and some minor wear to the seat coverings, consistent with careful domestic use over six decades.

Svend Ellekær was active during the golden age of Danish modernism and is known for designs that emphasize clarity, proportion, and a refined modern aesthetic. His collaboration with Christian Linneberg Møbelfabrik produced a number of elegant pieces with well-resolved structures and expressive woodwork. These stools reflect the Scandinavian design ideals of the early 1960s, particularly in their use of fine materials and functional sculptural quality.

The dimensions of each stool are 53.5 cm in diameter and 40 cm in height, which translates to approximately 21.1 inches in diameter and 15.7 inches in height. The seat height is also 40 cm or 15.7 inches. This set offers a rare example of coordinated seating elements with refined execution, suitable for both standalone use or in complement to lounge seating ensembles.
