Sven Ellekær

Sven Ellekær (1926–1984) was a Danish furniture designer associated with the golden age of Scandinavian design during the mid-20th century. He is known for elegant and sophisticated furniture designs that combined organic forms, precise craftsmanship, and a strong understanding of proportion. His work reflects the Danish modern tradition, with an emphasis on high-quality materials, refined woodworking, and furniture that balances comfort with visual clarity.

Biography

Sven Ellekær worked during the 1950s and 1960s, producing designs for a number of Danish and international furniture manufacturers. Although relatively little is known about his personal life, his surviving body of work shows a designer with a strong command of form, construction, and material detail. Vintage advertisements and period references describe him as an architect, suggesting a formal background in design and furniture construction.

Ellekær collaborated with several Danish manufacturers, including Chr. Linneberg Møbelfabrik, Komfort, Jensen & Molholm, Heltborg Møbler, Rolschau Møbler, and Jason Møbler. He also designed furniture for producers outside Denmark, including Vatne Møbler in Norway and Coja in the Netherlands. These collaborations demonstrate the broad reach of his work within Scandinavian and European furniture production.

His designs are particularly recognized for their sculptural silhouettes, curved wooden frames, and carefully resolved details. One of his most sought-after designs is the Three-Legged Easy Chair, produced by Chr. Linneberg Møbelfabrik in Denmark in 1962. The chair formed part of a larger family of lounge furniture distinguished by its unusual three-legged construction and strongly curved, expressive form.

Ellekær’s furniture often combines practical comfort with a distinctive visual identity. His work sits within the Danish modern tradition, yet many of his designs have a more individual and expressive character, marked by dynamic lines and a refined sense of balance.
