Tapio Wirkkala coffee table
This rare coffee table was designed by Tapio Wirkkala and produced by Asko in Finland during the 1950s. The tabletop is executed in birch veneer and features Wirkkala’s characteristic “Mussel” and “Leaf” inlays, a technique where precision-cut veneers are arranged in organic patterns that resemble natural forms. These intricate inlays demonstrate Wirkkala’s deep interest in natural structures and his exceptional craftsmanship in working with wood. The surface displays a warm honey-brown tone with fine grain patterns and a satin finish that emphasizes the texture and detail of the veneer composition.
The rectangular tabletop rests on slender conical steel legs ending in small brass feet, providing a light and balanced expression. The combination of natural birch with metal elements reflects the Scandinavian modern approach of uniting organic materials with refined industrial detailing. The overall construction is minimal and technically precise, creating a sense of visual lightness while maintaining structural integrity.
Tapio Wirkkala (1915–1985) was one of Finland’s most influential designers, known for his versatility across materials such as glass, wood, and metal. His designs often merge craftsmanship with industrial processes, blending functional clarity with a sculptural sense of form. Produced by Asko, one of Finland’s leading furniture manufacturers of the mid-20th century, this table represents a key period in Finnish design when artistry and industrial innovation were closely intertwined.
The table remains in good vintage condition with small signs of age and use, consistent with careful domestic use over time. The surface shows a developed patina that enhances the natural tone of the birch.
