Information

This ‘Bastiano’ model sofa was designed by Tobia Scarpa and produced by Haimi in Finland during the mid-20th century. This example features a frame made from richly figured rosewood paired with original black leather cushions, presenting a refined interpretation of modular seating characteristic of modernist design.

The solid rosewood frame displays a vivid and variegated grain pattern that provides visual contrast against the matte black leather upholstery. The wood is well preserved, showing light signs of wear and a lustrous finish that accentuates the natural textures of the rosewood. Structurally, the frame remains intact with sharp lines and precise joinery, free from damage.

The cushions are upholstered in the original black leather, which has developed a supple patina through age and use. The leather remains in good condition overall, exhibiting creasing and minor surface wear primarily on the seat cushions. The three-seat arrangement rests within an open, rectilinear wooden frame. The cushions are removable and not permanently fixed, embodying Scarpa’s intention for modularity and adaptable comfort.

The Bastiano series was introduced in the late 1960s as part of Scarpa’s exploration of more relaxed and inviting forms within modern furniture design. The series emphasizes interchangeability, with visible joinery that blurs the distinction between structural and decorative elements. This Finnish production by Haimi is a rare variation that maintains Scarpa’s design principles while adding a Nordic focus on material quality.

Tobia Scarpa, son of the renowned Italian architect Carlo Scarpa, developed a design language distinguished by technical precision and sculptural simplicity. His work frequently combined luxury materials with rational construction, and his collaboration with Haimi expanded the reach of his celebrated designs internationally.

The sofa measures 210 cm in width, 80 cm in depth, and 67 cm in height, with a seat height of 35 cm. Converted to imperial units, these dimensions are approximately 82.7 inches wide, 31.5 inches deep, 26.4 inches high, and a seat height of 13.8 inches. The combination of rosewood and black leather, along with the sofa’s proportions, results in a piece that is both architecturally distinctive and functionally comfortable.
