Information

This bar cabinet, model Bacchus, was designed by Torbjørn Afdal and produced by Mellemstrands møbelfabrik in Norway during the 1960s. The cabinet is constructed primarily in rosewood, with a clearly defined rectangular upper case raised on tapered legs. The proportions are compact yet vertical, giving the piece a light and balanced appearance while maintaining substantial storage capacity.

The exterior is executed in richly figured rosewood veneer with a warm brown tone and pronounced grain patterns. The two front doors are gently curved at the top edge and fitted with integrated vertical wooden handles, carved directly from solid wood and aligned symmetrically along the central seam. The cabinet stands on four slender, slightly tapered legs connected by stretchers, contributing to structural stability and visual lightness.

The interior is organized as a functional bar cabinet. Behind the doors, the upper section features mirrored panels at the back and adjustable glass shelves supported by steel rods, designed to reflect light and enhance visibility. Below, a horizontal shelf incorporates circular bottle holders, allowing bottles to be stored securely in a horizontal position. Two drawers are positioned beneath the bottle section, constructed with dovetail joints and fitted with recessed wooden pulls, intended for bar tools and accessories.

Torbjørn Afdal was one of Norway’s most influential mid-century furniture designers, known for his refined craftsmanship and clear functional logic. His designs often emphasize high-quality materials, sculptural detailing, and balanced proportions. The Bacchus bar cabinet reflects Afdal’s approach to combining practical use with restrained decorative elements, resulting in furniture that is both utilitarian and architecturally composed.

Mellemstrands møbelfabrik was an important Norwegian furniture manufacturer during the mid-twentieth century, producing well-crafted pieces in collaboration with leading designers. The company was known for its precise woodworking, careful material selection, and durable construction, characteristics that are clearly evident in this cabinet.

The cabinet is in good vintage condition, with visible signs of use and patina consistent with age. The rosewood surfaces show minor surface marks and wear. One lock is missing on one of the doors, while the remaining hardware is intact. The interior glass and mirrored surfaces are in good condition, and the structure remains stable.

The dimensions are approximately 90 cm in width, 40 cm in depth, and 125 cm in height, corresponding to about 35.4 inches wide, 15.7 inches deep, and 49.2 inches high.
