Torbjørn Afdal bench

Krobo bench or side table, originally designed by Norwegian furniture designer Torbjørn Afdal during the 1960s. The form is based on a refined and rational composition with a rectilinear top, supported by squared frame legs positioned flush with the edges, reinforcing the architectural nature of the piece. The bench has a long and flat horizontal profile with raised edge lips that visually frame the surface while subtly referencing traditional craftsmanship detailing.

The bench is constructed in richly figured rosewood, displaying dramatic grain patterns with deep reddish-brown tones and darker veining throughout. The surface is smooth and finely finished, offering a tactile quality while preserving the expressive character of the wood. The frame construction is robust yet minimal, showing Afdal’s skill in engineering elegant furniture with structural clarity and decorative restraint.

This model was produced by Mellemstrands Møbelfabrik under the Bruksbo label, a prominent Norwegian furniture producer active in the mid-20th century. Mellemstrands was known for its collaboration with designers such as Afdal, and for upholding the high-quality production standards associated with Norwegian modernism. The Bruksbo label remains visible on the underside of the bench, confirming its provenance and authenticity.

This piece is in good vintage condition with small signs of wear, consistent with its age. Minor surface marks and gentle patina are present but do not detract from the visual or structural integrity. It remains fully functional and visually compelling, reflecting the longevity and craftsmanship of Scandinavian modernist furniture.
