Torbjørn Afdal desk
This rare and large executive desk was designed by Torbjørn Afdal and produced by Haug Snekkeri in Norway during the 1960s. Executed in richly grained rosewood, the desk exemplifies the refinement and precision of Norwegian mid-century craftsmanship, combining functional clarity with an understated sculptural presence.
The desk’s structure is defined by its generous rectangular top with slightly beveled edges and a subtle overhang that enhances its light visual profile. The wood grain displays remarkable depth and variation, with vivid rosewood patterns running continuously across the surface and down the sides. The front panel features a series of vertically matched veneers, while the rear side presents a floating storage unit composed of drawers with integrated recessed pulls, crafted with precision to maintain the clean geometry of the piece. The drawers are built in solid wood with smooth dovetail joints, bearing the original Haug Snekkeri maker’s label inside.
The desk stands on tapered, rounded legs that connect seamlessly into the frame, a characteristic design element in Afdal’s furniture. The piece’s proportions and details reveal an architectural sensibility—solid yet refined, with an emphasis on material quality and structure. It was fully restored, preserving the original finish while enhancing the natural luster of the rosewood.
Torbjørn Afdal (1917–1999) was one of Norway’s leading furniture designers, known for his modernist interpretation of traditional Scandinavian craftsmanship. Working primarily for Bruksbo and later for Haug Snekkeri, he developed a series of elegant and functional designs that achieved both national and international recognition. His work often combines minimal ornamentation with technical mastery, emphasizing the inherent beauty of the wood.
This desk remains in excellent vintage condition, with small signs of age consistent with gentle use. It stands as a representative example of Norwegian mid-century design—functional, precise, and constructed to endure.
