Information

This rare large coffee table, model Sari, was designed by the Norwegian designer Torbjørn Afdal and produced by Bruksbo during the 1960s. The table is executed in rosewood with a strong linear grain pattern that gives depth and richness to the surface. A distinctive design feature is the combination of the warm-toned rosewood with a central black formica inlay, which provides both a visual contrast and a durable surface. The use of brass fittings and detailing adds subtle refinement and reflects Afdal’s attention to both structure and finish.

The construction demonstrates a balance between geometric precision and material quality. The legs are executed as rounded cylindrical supports, connected with stretchers that ensure stability while maintaining a light expression. The tabletop extends with foldable leaves, increasing its width and adaptability for different uses. This flexibility was characteristic of Scandinavian furniture in the postwar period, where functional solutions were often integrated into elegant designs.

The table has been completely restored and remains in excellent vintage condition with only minor signs of use, allowing the rosewood to show its full depth of color and pattern. The restoration respects the original craftsmanship and design intent, preserving the integrity of the piece while ensuring durability for future use.

Torbjørn Afdal, active primarily in the 1950s and 1960s, was one of Norway’s most influential designers. His work combined Scandinavian modern ideals with a particularly refined sense of proportion and detailing. Produced by Bruksbo, one of Norway’s leading furniture makers at the time, the Sari model reflects the company’s commitment to high-quality materials and design intended for both everyday function and long-term appreciation.
