Uno & Östen Kristiansson mirror

This rare wall mirror was designed by Uno and Östen Kristiansson and produced by Luxus in Vittsjö, Sweden during the 1960s. It exemplifies Scandinavian modernist design principles, where functional purpose is enhanced through refined detailing and the use of carefully chosen natural materials.

The rectangular frame is crafted from solid rosewood, showcasing a rich reddish-brown color and pronounced linear grain patterns. The warmth of the rosewood contrasts elegantly with the reflective glass surface, creating a balanced visual composition. The frame’s corners feature exposed dowel joints accented with inlaid sterling silver pins, which serve both structural and decorative roles. These silver pins add a subtle tactile precision and understated ornamentation, reflecting Luxus’ high standards of craftsmanship.

The mirror is set within a slim, recessed channel in the frame, appearing nearly flush with the wood surface. This detail reinforces the clean, architectural lines characteristic of the piece. The frame’s proportions are narrow and elongated, designed to accommodate full-body reflection when mounted vertically, and are well suited to narrower wall spaces.

Uno and Östen Kristiansson were prolific Swedish designers noted for their lighting and mirror designs for Luxus, a company founded by their father. Their work is distinguished by clarity of line, superior material quality, and the seamless integration of traditional Scandinavian craftsmanship with modernist aesthetics.

The mirror remains in very good condition with only minor signs of age-related wear on the wood and glass. The original manufacturer’s label is preserved on the lower corner, confirming its authenticity.

The mirror measures 47 cm in width, 1.5 cm in depth, and 122 cm in height (approximately 18.5 by 0.6 by 48 inches).
