Vicke Lindstrand table lamp
This rare table lamp, designed by Vicke Lindstrand and produced by Upsala Ekeby in Sweden, is a sophisticated example of mid-century ceramic artistry and Scandinavian lighting design. Characterized by a sculptural presence and attention to form, the lamp merges functional lighting with decorative elegance.
The ceramic base is tall and subtly tapered, rendered in a soft, creamy off-white glaze. Vertical ridged grooves run the length of the form, providing textural depth and visual rhythm. The shape draws inspiration from classical fluted columns or elongated vases, lending the lamp an architectural quality that balances simplicity with detail. The ceramic surface is smooth and evenly glazed, with the gentle off-white tone contributing to a calm and neutral palette suitable for a range of interior settings.
The accompanying lampshade is wide and conical, proportionally designed to counterbalance the slender verticality of the base. Made of lightly textured fabric, the shade emits a warm amber light when illuminated. A subtle, stylized leaf motif is delicately integrated into the fabric weave, echoing natural themes common in mid-century Scandinavian design and enhancing the lamp’s organic character.
Vicke Lindstrand (1904–1983) was one of Sweden’s most prominent 20th-century designers, particularly known for his work in glass and ceramics. His career included major tenures at Orrefors, Kosta Boda, and Upsala Ekeby, where he explored modernist form and surface treatment. At Upsala Ekeby, Lindstrand produced a range of sculptural ceramics that bridged fine art and industrial design, often incorporating rhythmic geometries and subdued color palettes.
This lamp is in excellent vintage condition. The ceramic base is free of chips, cracks, or restorations. The brass and wire components show a gentle patina consistent with age, contributing to its vintage authenticity. The original lampshade is well-preserved, retaining both structure and surface integrity, with only minor age-related wear visible upon close inspection.
The overall dimensions are 40 cm in diameter and 48 cm in height, corresponding to approximately 15.7 inches in diameter and 18.9 inches in height.
