Viggo Boesen sofa
This very rare sofa was designed by Viggo Boesen and produced by Hos Wulff in Denmark during the 1930s. The frame is executed in dark stained beech, with organically curved armrests and legs that accentuate the sculptural presence of the piece. The sofa has been newly reupholstered in high-quality sheepskin, a material that highlights Boesen’s affinity for soft, natural textures and enhances the inviting character of the form.
The design reflects Boesen’s association with the Danish “funkis” movement and his close relation to the concept of “organic functionalism”. Unlike the strict geometries of international modernism, Boesen’s furniture embraced rounded contours and flowing lines inspired by nature, aiming to create comfortable, human-centered interiors. The present sofa exemplifies this approach, with its generous proportions, softly curved backrest, and enveloping silhouette that appears to embrace the sitter.
Hos Wulff, a Copenhagen-based cabinetmaker, was known for producing high-quality, custom-made furniture by leading designers of the period. The collaboration between Viggo Boesen and Hos Wulff resulted in some of the most innovative upholstered furniture of the era, often made in limited numbers and today considered rare collector’s items.
The sofa is preserved in excellent condition, with the newly upholstered sheepskin faithful to the spirit of the original. The beech frame retains its deep stained finish, offering a strong visual contrast to the pale wool, while the organic armrests demonstrate the cabinetmaker’s refined craftsmanship.
The dimensions are 210 cm in width, 100 cm in depth, and 80 cm in height, with a seat height of 38 cm. This corresponds to 82.7 inches wide, 39.4 inches deep, 31.5 inches high, and 15 inches seat height.
