Information

These pair of table lamps are a rare example of Vilhelm Lauritzen’s design work for Louis Poulsen, produced in Denmark during the 1940s. It is executed in chromed steel with a rounded, sculptural shade and a slim cylindrical arm partially clad in ribbed black vinyl for both visual contrast and grip. The organically shaped shade is slightly asymmetrical, directing light in a soft, concentrated beam ideal for task lighting. The base is circular and flat, featuring a small switch and a jointed connection that allows for adjustability.

The lamps are finished in polished chrome, with a warm patina that speaks to its age and history. Minor surface scratches and slight darkening of the metal are present, consistent with careful use over decades, but the overall condition remains excellent for a piece of this period. The black vinyl on the arm is intact, adding a subtle textural element and reinforcing the lamp’s utilitarian yet elegant character.

Vilhelm Lauritzen (1894–1984) was a leading Danish architect and designer, known for his pioneering work in functionalism. His designs often combined rigorous functionality with refined, modern forms, and he collaborated extensively with Louis Poulsen to create lighting solutions for many of his architectural projects, including Copenhagen Airport and Radiohuset. Louis Poulsen, founded in 1874, is a renowned Danish lighting manufacturer celebrated for its close collaborations with influential designers such as Poul Henningsen and Arne Jacobsen, making this lamp a part of a significant lineage of Scandinavian modern lighting.

Stylistically, this piece exemplifies mid-century Scandinavian design with its minimalism, precision detailing, and emphasis on functionality. Its chromed surface and fluid silhouette give it a timeless presence that fits seamlessly into both historical and contemporary interiors.

Dimensions are 14.5 cm wide, 24 cm deep, and 41 cm high (approximately 5.7 x 9.4 x 16.1 inches).
