Yngve Ekström bench
This rare coffee table, also suitable as a side table or bench, was designed by Yngve Ekström and produced by Westbergs Möbler in Tranås, Sweden, during the 1950s. Crafted in teak with oak details, the piece exemplifies the restrained yet highly functional approach of Scandinavian modern design. Its construction highlights clean lines, balanced proportions, and finely executed joinery, all hallmarks of Ekström’s design language.
The tabletop presents a rectangular form in warm-toned teak with a subtle grain pattern, framed by oak edges that provide structural reinforcement and a contrasting detail. The table rests on tapered legs, which are joined by low stretchers to ensure stability while keeping a visually light and elegant expression. The joinery is executed with precision, with exposed dowel inlays that emphasize craftsmanship. This versatility allows the piece to function not only as a coffee table but also as a low bench, reflecting the Scandinavian focus on multi-purpose furniture.
Yngve Ekström (1913–1988) was one of Sweden’s most prominent postwar designers, best known for creating the Lamino chair. His work consistently combined simplicity with refined details, making everyday furniture both durable and visually appealing. Westbergs Möbler in Tranås was a recognized Swedish producer specializing in high-quality wooden furniture, often collaborating with leading designers of the mid-century era.
The table remains in good vintage condition, with minor signs of usage and a developed surface patina consistent with age. Its structural integrity is fully preserved, and the natural wear contributes to its authenticity and character.
