Yngve Ekström side table
This rare small coffee or side table was designed by Yngve Ekström and produced by Westbergs Möbler in Tranås, Sweden, during the 1950s. It exemplifies the refined lightness and sculptural precision characteristic of Scandinavian mid-century design. Ekström, co-founder of Swedese and known for his masterful sense of proportion, here demonstrates his ability to balance organic form with structural clarity.
The tabletop is crafted in richly grained rosewood, with a striking triangular form softened by gently rounded corners and slightly raised edges. The surface reveals deep tonal variations and a lustrous finish that enhances the expressive character of the wood. The top rests on an elegant three-legged frame in black-lacquered wood, featuring tapered, hand-shaped legs connected by cross stretchers for stability. The contrast between the dark frame and the warm rosewood top gives the piece a distinctive sculptural tension.
This table reflects Ekström’s early exploration of minimalist form and material contrast—design principles that would define much of his later work. It is both functional and architectural in its composition, offering a subtle interplay between balance, curvature, and lightness.
The table has been completely restored and remains in excellent vintage condition, with minimal signs of use consistent with careful preservation. A superb example of Swedish craftsmanship and Ekström’s elegant, organic modernism.
