Arne Hovmand-Olsen dining chairs
This set of six dining chairs, model 210, was designed by Arne Hovmand-Olsen and produced by Mogens Kold in Denmark in 1957. A quintessential example of Scandinavian modern design, the chairs feature organic curves, exceptional craftsmanship, and the use of natural materials that define the mid-century style.
The frame of the chairs is constructed from a combination of teak and oak, showcasing the warmth of the wood with a sculptural design. The legs are slightly splayed and tapered, contributing to the elegant, airy appearance of the piece. The backrest is gracefully curved, seamlessly transitioning into the armrests, which are open and unadorned except for black coil-wrapped details. These details add a contrasting visual interest to the natural wood tones. The seats are subtly contoured to ensure comfort, with brass fastenings securing the upholstery, which further enhances the refined aesthetic of the design.
Arne Hovmand-Olsen, a respected Danish designer, is celebrated for his creations that blend elegance with functionality. His works are distinguished by clean lines and a light, architectural quality, adhering to the principles of the Scandinavian modern movement. This style emphasizes simplicity, high-quality craftsmanship, and timeless appeal. Mogens Kold, the manufacturer of these chairs, was known for producing some of Denmark’s most iconic pieces during the mid-20th century. Their commitment to precision woodworking and innovative designs made them an integral part of the Danish modern furniture movement.
In terms of condition, the chairs remain in good vintage condition, showing only minor wear consistent with age and use. The dimensions are 49.5 cm in width, 50 cm in depth, and 76 cm in height, with a seat height of 44 cm (approximately 19.5 inches x 19.7 inches x 29.9 inches, SH: 17.3 inches). These chairs are a fine representation of Scandinavian modern design, combining both beauty and functionality.
