Poul Henningsen ceiling lamp
This very rare ceiling lamp, model PH 5/3, was designed by Poul Henningsen and produced by Louis Poulsen in Denmark. Marked with “PAT. APPL,” it dates back to 1928, placing it among the earliest production examples of Henningsen’s groundbreaking multi-shade lighting system.
The lamp features a nickel-plated socket combined with copper and white lacquered metal shades, arranged according to Henningsen’s scientific principles of light reflection to deliver glare-free, soft, and evenly diffused illumination. The design follows his modular system where “5” indicates the 50 cm diameter of the top shade, and “3” refers to the proportionate size of the lower shades.
As an early icon of Scandinavian modernism, the lamp exemplifies functionalist design and superior craftsmanship. The copper has developed a natural patina that adds to the lamp’s historical character. The piece remains in original condition with its fittings intact and measures 50 cm in diameter and 30 cm in height (19.7 x 11.8 inches).
