Information

This rare ceiling lamp, model PH-4/3, was designed by Poul Henningsen and produced by Louis Poulsen in Denmark during the late 1920s, specifically between 1926 and 1928. The lamp features Henningsen’s characteristic multi-shade system, designed to diffuse light evenly and eliminate glare, a concept that was groundbreaking in lighting design at the time. This particular piece was manufactured for the German market, as evidenced by the markings “PAT. APPL.” and “D.R.P. 453026” engraved on the internal metal ring.

The lamp exhibits a striking color palette with exterior surfaces painted in a deep green hue, complemented by gold-painted interiors that enhance light reflection and warmth. The shades are constructed from metal and retain their original form, though they have been professionally refinished and repainted in keeping with the original design intent. The layered, circular shades create a balanced and harmonious composition, emphasizing the geometric and functional aesthetic typical of Scandinavian modernism.

Poul Henningsen (1894–1967) was a Danish designer, architect, and writer renowned for his pioneering work in lighting design. His collaboration with Louis Poulsen began in the mid-1920s and led to the creation of the PH lamp series, which remains highly influential in modern design. Henningsen’s work was driven by a humanistic approach, combining technical innovation with aesthetic simplicity. Louis Poulsen, the manufacturer, has been a key figure in Scandinavian lighting design since its founding in 1874 and has produced many of the most iconic lighting designs of the 20th century.

The condition of this lamp is consistent with its age and careful restoration. The shades show minor traces of previous wear beneath the repainting, while the metal components exhibit a rich patina, contributing to its authentic vintage character. The lamp is fully functional and emits a warm, diffused light, characteristic of Henningsen’s vision for comfortable and glare-free illumination.

The lamp measures 40 cm in diameter and 30 cm in height, which corresponds to approximately 15.75 inches in diameter and 11.8 inches in height. This proportion makes it suitable for both residential and commercial settings, where it can serve as a focal point of the interior decor while providing functional lighting.
