Nils Fougstedt vase

Information

This rare vase, designed by Nils Fougstedt and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden in 1929, is a distinguished example of the Swedish Grace movement. The piece embodies a synthesis of neoclassical elements and the early modernist aesthetic that characterized the period. Its symmetrical, sculptural form centers around a spherical body that transitions smoothly into a flared top. Two geometric handles extend from the sides in an angular, stepped pattern, their sharp lines softened by the vase’s curved main structure. The interplay between the warm brass detailing and the matte pewter surface creates visual depth, highlighting the architectural qualities of the design.

Nils Fougstedt was a renowned Swedish designer and metal artist noted for his precise and elegant metalwork. His extensive collaboration with Svenskt Tenn—a leading Swedish interior design company founded by Estrid Ericson in 1924—helped define Scandinavian decorative arts by merging traditional craftsmanship with innovative design approaches. Fougstedt’s work often reflects a nuanced balance between historical reference and modern form, making his pieces highly sought after by collectors.

The vase is preserved in very good condition, exhibiting a naturally aged patina on both pewter and brass components. Minor surface wear consistent with age adds to the piece’s authentic character. The base is stamped with the Svenskt Tenn mark, confirming its provenance. The dimensions measure approximately 34 centimeters in width, 22 centimeters in depth, and 25 centimeters in height, or 13.4 by 8.7 by 9.8 inches, resulting in a substantial yet balanced presence.
