Nanna Ditzel candlestick

This rare sculptural candlestick was designed by Nanna Ditzel and produced by Poul Kolds Savværk in Denmark during the 1960s. Constructed from solid pine with brass candle inserts, it stands as a distinctive example of Danish mid-century design that experiments with both form and function. The candlestick features a central vertical axis, from which six stacked layers of pivoting arms radiate horizontally. Each arm is fitted with a circular brass socket to hold a candle, and the arms can be adjusted to create varying compositions, allowing the piece to shift visually depending on its arrangement.

The structure is supported by a four-spoke cross base, also made of pine, which complements the rest of the construction with its formal clarity and warmth. The soft golden tone of the pine contrasts beautifully with the metallic details of the brass candle sockets, and the wood’s visible grain adds to the handcrafted quality of the piece, further highlighting its artisanal craftsmanship.

Nanna Ditzel (1923–2005) was one of Denmark’s most innovative postwar designers, known for her work across furniture, textiles, and decorative arts. This candlestick embodies her dynamic and sculptural approach to design, blending playfulness with modularity. Poul Kolds Savværk, the producing workshop, was recognized for its precision woodcraft and functionalist aesthetics, and it collaborated with many prominent designers during the 1950s and 1960s.

The candlestick remains in very good vintage condition, with minor signs of wear and patina on the wood and brass, consistent with age and use. It serves both as a functional lighting accessory and as a kinetic tabletop sculpture.

The dimensions of the piece are 34 cm in diameter and 32 cm in height, which corresponds to approximately 13.39 inches in diameter and 12.60 inches in height.
