Table lamp

This rare and sculptural table lamp, likely produced in Italy during the 1950s, seamlessly integrates organic and industrial elements through its distinctive materials. The central feature of the lamp is a genuine tortoiseshell, mounted onto a custom brass armature and affixed to a clear plexiglass base. The shell presents a domed oval form with a pronounced curvature and deeply ridged surface structure, showcasing a rich, mottled pattern in deep brown, amber, and black tones. When lit, the translucent nature of the tortoiseshell creates a striking visual effect, allowing warm, diffuse light to pass through its natural striations.

The reverse side of the tortoiseshell reveals the internal structure and mounting components, with two bulb sockets affixed to a Y-shaped brass support. The brass has developed a patina over time, with surface oxidation that adds to the piece’s character, reflecting its age and use. The transparent plexiglass base serves as a stabilizing counterbalance, giving the lamp a light and elevated appearance that contrasts with the heavier materials above.

Though the designer attribution remains unconfirmed, the lamp aligns with mid-century Italian design sensibilities, particularly the fascination with biomorphic forms and the incorporation of natural materials into lighting design. Similar works from this period, such as those by Italian designers Gabriella Crespi and Tommaso Barbi, often fused handcrafted organic elements with industrial components, though this lamp lacks a direct signature or marking.

The lamp is in good condition with light wear consistent with age. The tortoiseshell shows a few natural age-related surface irregularities, but there are no visible cracks or repairs. The brass structure is structurally sound, with oxidation typical of aged, unpolished brass. The lamp remains functional and retains its original wiring configuration, though rewiring is recommended for contemporary safety standards.
