Tapio Wirkkala tray
This rare glass tray, model 3369-3869, was designed by Tapio Wirkkala and produced by Iittala in Finland. Signed and dated “TAPIO WIRKKALA IITTALA -58”, it stands as an early and important example of Wirkkala’s poetic approach to form and material during the mid-1950s.
The model was first designed in 1954 and remained in production until 1960, representing a period when Wirkkala’s work for Iittala helped define the visual language of Finnish modern glass. The tray’s organic, leaf-like shape embodies the designer’s sensitivity to natural forms, while the subtle linear texture on the underside interacts beautifully with light, creating soft reflections and a sense of movement across its surface.
Wirkkala’s ability to merge industrial technique with artistic precision is evident in this piece, which combines clarity, rhythm, and balance in a deceptively simple form. It captures the refined essence of Scandinavian modernism—where restraint and craftsmanship converge to produce objects of timeless elegance.
The tray remains in good vintage condition with minor signs of use consistent with age.
