Information

This rare pair of easy chairs was designed by Illum Wikkelsø and produced by Niels Kofoed Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1960s. The chairs are constructed from wood finished in both white and black lacquer, creating a distinct visual contrast that emphasises the structural elements of the frame. Wikkelsø’s characteristic organic lines are visible in the gently curved armrests and the balanced proportions, reflecting his broader contribution to Danish modern seating design.

The seat and back sections are formed by black-lacquered panels that cradle the cushions, combining a sculptural appearance with functional support. The cushions have been newly reupholstered in a yellow wool fabric, adding texture and a strong chromatic accent to the otherwise monochrome frame. The original brass fittings securing the panels remain visible, contributing to the technical expression of the chair.

Illum Wikkelsø was known for designs that merged comfort with architectural clarity, often employing bold yet simple shapes. This pair of chairs demonstrates his interest in creating furniture that is both visually expressive and relaxed in posture. Niels Kofoed Møbelfabrik, the producing workshop, was active in mid-century Danish furniture manufacturing and collaborated with several designers during the period.

The chairs are in good vintage condition with signs of usage and a well-developed patina on the lacquered surfaces. Minor wear is present on edges and fittings, consistent with age, while the new upholstery ensures functional comfort.

Dimensions: 75.5 × 77 × 68 cm (approximately 29.7 × 30.3 × 26.8 inches). Seat height: 35 cm (approximately 13.8 inches).
