Information

This rare pair of early easy chairs, model A 423, was designed by Hans Wegner and produced by Plan Møbler in Aarhus, Denmark, during the 1940s. These chairs exemplify Wegner’s early exploration of functional elegance, showcasing his exceptional craftsmanship and thoughtful use of materials. Constructed from solid mahogany, the frames present a classic linear form accented by gently curved armrests and subtly tapered legs, creating a balanced and visually light silhouette.

The original black leather upholstery covers both the seating and backrest, having developed a rich patina that attests to the chairs’ age and quality. The leather is tightly stretched over the frame, offering firm yet comfortable support. The mahogany armrests are carefully sculpted with soft curves, designed for ergonomic comfort while maintaining an understated, refined aesthetic. A cross-stretcher beneath the seat reinforces the structure, combining durability with the graceful design typical of mid-century Scandinavian furniture.

Hans Wegner, a seminal figure in Danish modernism, was celebrated for his mastery of woodwork and ability to harmonize traditional cabinetmaking with modernist ideals. His work in the 1940s and 1950s was pivotal in establishing Danish furniture design on the global stage. Plan Møbler, though lesser-known, was a respected Danish manufacturer noted for producing quality furniture in collaboration with skilled designers during this period.

The chairs are in good vintage condition, exhibiting age-appropriate wear, especially on the leather, which shows natural creases and surface patina. Each chair measures 65 cm in width, 66 cm in depth, and 85 cm in height (25.6 x 26 x 33.5 inches), with a seat height of 40 cm (15.7 inches), representing a refined and early example of Wegner’s design legacy.
