Information

This rare mid-century Scandinavian bench or side table was produced in Sweden during the 1960s by an unknown designer. It is constructed entirely of solid pine, reflecting the era’s focus on natural materials and functional design.

The bench features a rectilinear structure with a top surface composed of evenly spaced slatted pine boards, creating a rhythmic pattern that enhances both visual clarity and ventilation. It is supported by six square-section legs connected by stretchers along both axes, ensuring a sturdy and stable frame. The construction employs traditional woodworking techniques such as through-tenon joints and visible dowels, which highlight the artisanal quality of the piece and add subtle decorative interest to its otherwise minimal composition.

The wood shows a warm honey-toned finish, with visible growth patterns and knots characteristic of Scandinavian pine. Over time, the finish has developed a soft patina. The surface exhibits minor wear, including small dents and scuffs consistent with decades of domestic use. Overall, the bench remains in good condition, with solid structural integrity.

Its proportions and slatted surface make it suitable for versatile use as either a low table or seating, consistent with Scandinavian design principles that prioritize both functionality and formal clarity. The piece’s simplicity and focus on joinery align it with the democratic design ethos prevalent in mid-20th century Swedish furniture making.

The dimensions are 130 centimeters wide, 52 centimeters deep, and 35 centimeters high (approximately 51.2 by 20.5 by 13.8 inches).
