Illum Wikkelsø easy chair

Information

This very rare easy chair, model V11, was designed by Danish architect and furniture designer Illum Wikkelsø and produced by Holger Christiansen in Denmark during the 1960s. The chair exemplifies mid-century Scandinavian modernism, blending bold geometric form with relaxed ergonomic comfort, all crafted from high-quality natural materials.

The frame is built from solid oak with stained, tapered legs that create a sturdy yet subtly elevated base. The oak’s warm tone and slightly matte finish complement the original cognac brown leather upholstery, which displays a well-developed patina with natural creases and softening consistent with age and use. Despite this wear, the leather remains structurally sound and supple.

The chair’s design is defined by a wide stance, a high backrest, and angular arm profiles, resulting in a sculptural silhouette that is both architectural and inviting. The deep seat and angled back are engineered for prolonged comfort, enhanced by generously filled cushions that sit loose within the tight frame. The backrest incorporates a subtle winged flare, lending character and an embracing spatial presence.

Illum Wikkelsø (1919–1999) was a key figure in Danish modern design, renowned for his pursuit of organic form, functional detail, and enduring comfort. His work often combined clean lines with natural materials, and the V11 stands out as a more assertive, sculptural lounge piece. Holger Christiansen, the manufacturer, was active during the Danish modern movement’s peak and produced many of Wikkelsø’s designs to a high standard of craftsmanship.

This chair represents postwar Scandinavian furniture that balances formality with relaxation, reflecting the Danish dedication to visual clarity and everyday utility. It is in good original condition, showing signs of age on the leather such as patina, creasing, and softened edges, but no tears or structural issues.

Dimensions are 96 cm wide, 95 cm deep, and 87 cm high (approximately 37.8 x 37.4 x 34.3 inches), with a seat height of 40 cm (approximately 15.7 inches).
