Ole Wanscher sofa

This sofa, model 116, commonly known as the Senator, was designed by Ole Wanscher and produced by France & Son in Denmark in 1951. The frame is built from solid rosewood, notable for its rich, deep tones and pronounced grain patterns that highlight the natural beauty of the wood. The structural design is characterized by gently curved armrests, elegantly sculpted legs, and a subtly angled backrest, which together emphasize both ergonomic comfort and refined craftsmanship.

The original upholstery consists of black leather, which features deep button tufting on both the seat and back cushions. Over time, the leather has developed a natural patina, reflecting the durability and quality of the material. The sofa’s three-seat configuration reflects Wanscher’s meticulous attention to proportions, achieving a harmonious balance between visual lightness and solid construction.

Ole Wanscher (1903–1985) was a Danish architect and furniture designer linked to the Scandinavian modern movement. His work drew heavily on classical furniture traditions, particularly British and French influences, which he reinterpreted through clean lines and modern forms. His collaboration with France & Son marked a significant phase in Danish design history, blending traditional high-quality woodworking with innovative production methods.

France & Son was a prominent Danish furniture manufacturer during the mid-20th century, renowned for partnerships with leading Danish designers. The company was recognized for its precise woodworking and efficient production techniques, resulting in furniture that was both elegant and structurally sound.

The Senator sofa exemplifies Wanscher’s skill in combining traditional craftsmanship with modernist aesthetics. Its dimensions are 185 cm wide, 75 cm deep, and 78 cm high, with a seat height of 44 cm (72.8 x 29.5 x 30.7 inches, seat height 17.3 inches). The sofa remains in good vintage condition, showing natural wear on the leather and minor surface marks on the wood frame, consistent with its age.
