Pierre Forsell candlestick
This is a sculptural brass candlestick titled Variabel, designed by Swedish designer Pierre Forssell for Skultuna Messingsbruk, one of Sweden’s oldest and most esteemed brass foundries. It was produced during the 1950s and is an example of Scandinavian mid-century modern metalwork.
The piece is executed entirely in solid brass with a characteristic patina developed over time. The design is marked by a semicylindrical body with a precisely incised channel to hold a candle and a lateral arm terminating in a sphere that acts as a counterweight. This mechanical element is both decorative and functional, allowing for movement and balance adjustment—hence the name Variabel. The geometric clarity and minimal detailing reflect Forsell’s affinity for structural honesty and expressive functionality.
The surface is visibly aged with signs of oxidation and patina, consistent with its material and vintage. The piece is engraved on the underside with the Skultuna maker’s mark and the designer’s signature, verifying its authenticity. Skultuna, founded in 1607, has a long history of producing high-quality brass objects and collaborated with notable designers during the 20th century, among them Pierre Forssell, who was instrumental in redefining Scandinavian brassware with a modernist aesthetic.
The candlestick measures 4 cm in width (1.6 inches), 9 cm in depth (3.5 inches), and 17 cm in height (6.7 inches). Its vertical orientation and refined sculptural form make it equally suitable as a utilitarian object or a collectible design artifact.
