Pierre Forssell candlesticks
This refined pair of candlesticks, designed by Pierre Forssell and produced by Skultuna in Sweden, embodies the sculptural clarity and functional elegance characteristic of Scandinavian modernism. Executed in solid brass, each candlestick features a striking geometric silhouette defined by sharp triangular forms that taper upward, creating a dynamic interplay of light, shadow, and material. The angular profile is both minimalist and architectural, reflecting Forssell’s disciplined approach to design.
The surfaces display a naturally developed patina, with areas of warm golden hue interspersed with darker oxidation and light verdigris, particularly in recessed sections. This aged character enhances the visual depth of the brass and underscores the authenticity of the pieces. Minor surface wear and tarnish are consistent with their vintage nature and add to their historical charm.
Pierre Forssell (1925–2004) was a key figure in Swedish design during the mid-20th century. Trained as a silversmith and later head designer for Skultuna Messingsbruk, he is renowned for his refined, modernist interpretations of utilitarian objects. His work emphasized precision, balance, and the inherent beauty of materials—qualities clearly evident in these candlesticks.
Skultuna, founded in 1607 and granted royal warrant by King Karl IX of Sweden, has a long tradition of producing finely crafted brassware. The company’s collaboration with Forssell in the 1950s and 1960s marked a pivotal moment in its history, bridging traditional craftsmanship with modern design sensibilities.
This pair of candlesticks stands as a significant example of the intersection between timeless form and artisanal quality, and as a collectible artifact from one of Sweden’s most respected design legacies. They remain in good vintage condition, structurally sound and visually evocative, suitable for both functional use and as sculptural decorative objects.
