Information

This is a rare set of nine dining chairs, model 3103, also known as the “T-chair” designed by Danish architect Arne Jacobsen and produced by Fritz Hansen in Denmark in 1967. The model was introduced in the 1950s as part of Jacobsen’s exploration into molded plywood seating, and this particular version dates from the late phase of its production, identifiable by its steel leg frame and teak-veneered shell.

The seat and backrest are crafted from molded teak plywood, with a continuous organic form that widens at the top of the backrest to create a distinct T-shaped profile. The teak has a warm reddish-brown hue with visible linear grain, and a slightly satin finish that highlights the natural patterning of the wood veneer. The curvature of the seat and back is ergonomically contoured for comfort, following Jacobsen’s approach to minimal structure with maximum function. The base consists of four tubular steel legs finished in matte black enamel, angled slightly outward to provide stability. The chairs are stackable, and each seat is supported by a four-point steel bracket mounted beneath the shell, using Fritz Hansen’s signature understructure for lightweight, durable construction. The connection between shell and frame is visible from the underside and remains structurally sound.

Arne Jacobsen was a pioneering figure in modernist design and a long-standing collaborator with Fritz Hansen. Model 3103 shares design language with his more famous 3107 series but is differentiated by its narrower profile and characteristic T-back form. It was originally designed for multi-purpose institutional and domestic use, favoring flexibility and visual lightness.

Each chair measures 41 cm in width (16.1 inches), 45 cm in depth (17.7 inches), and 77 cm in height (30.3 inches), with a seat height of 43 cm (16.9 inches). The set is in good vintage condition with consistent patina to the teak veneer and minor signs of wear to the black lacquered steel legs. All chairs remain fully functional and structurally stable.
