Information

This rare table mirror, designed by Uno and Östen Kristiansson and produced by Luxus in Vittsjö, Sweden during the 1960s, is a refined example of Scandinavian mid-century design that blends precision craftsmanship with a restrained material palette. The mirror features a circular reflective surface encased in a solid rosewood frame, mounted on a slender vertical stem made of steel. This stem is anchored by a cross-shaped base in brushed stainless steel, offering a combination of visual lightness and structural stability.

The rosewood frame is distinguished by its rich grain, exhibiting tonal variations from warm mid-browns to deeper streaks, contributing visual depth to the otherwise minimalist form. A dovetailed rosewood bracket affixed to the back supports the mirror and allows for tilt adjustment, enabling the user to position the reflective surface with precision. This mechanism is subtly integrated into the rear of the mirror, reflecting the designers’ commitment to both function and form.

The base is constructed from brushed stainless steel and adopts a cross configuration, providing balance while introducing a contrasting industrial element to the natural texture of the wood. The back panel of the mirror is finished in a light cream laminate or hardboard, which complements the wood’s warmth and enhances the visual refinement of the piece from all angles.

Uno and Östen Kristiansson were key contributors to postwar Swedish design through their work with Luxus, the company founded by their father in 1950. While initially focused on lighting, Luxus expanded into accessories such as mirrors during the 1960s. The Kristianssons’ design ethos emphasized clean geometry, honest materials, and precise construction. Their use of rosewood and high-quality finishes, often in combination with metal or glass, helped define the luxurious yet unadorned style for which Luxus became known.

This table mirror remains in good vintage condition. The wooden elements show a well-preserved finish with no structural flaws or repairs. The steel base displays minor surface wear and oxidation, consistent with age and use, though it remains fully stable and visually coherent with the rest of the design.

The mirror measures 47 cm in width, 26 cm in depth, and 50 cm in height (approximately 18.5 x 10.2 x 19.7 inches). It stands as a carefully composed and materially rich example of mid-century Swedish decorative design, combining sculptural clarity with practical utility.
