Kai Winding bureau
This rare bureau or sideboard was designed by Kai Winding and produced by Poul Hundevad Møbler in Denmark during the 1960s. Crafted from richly grained rosewood, the piece is supported by a slender and architecturally expressive geometric brass base. Diagonal brass stretchers enhance both the visual lightness and structural stability of the design.
The form presents a compact rectangular volume housing ten drawers arranged symmetrically in two columns. The drawer fronts feature horizontal recessed handles, with integrated locks on the top drawers for secure storage. The rosewood veneer displays a pronounced and highly figured grain, with rich variations in tone ranging from deep reddish-brown to darker brown and black striping, characteristic of high-quality rosewood from the period.
The bureau is in very good condition, showing light signs of wear and age-related patina on the brass legs and drawer surfaces. The drawer mechanisms function smoothly and are well aligned, while the wood finish remains intact and consistent throughout.
Though less documented than some contemporaries, Kai Winding contributed notable works to Scandinavian modernism with an emphasis on clean lines, well-balanced proportions, and premium materials. Poul Hundevad, based in Vamdrup, Denmark, was known for furniture that married craftsmanship with minimalist aesthetics, often incorporating flexible storage options and distinctive leg designs.
The dimensions are 110 centimeters in width, 40.5 centimeters in depth, and 77 centimeters in height (approximately 43.3 x 15.9 x 30.3 inches).
