Börje Johanson bar stools

This set of six bar stools was designed by Börje Johanson and produced by Johanson Design in Markaryd, Sweden, during the 1960s. The stools exemplify mid-century Scandinavian design, combining functionalism with elegant material contrasts and sculptural forms.

Each stool features a tulip-style pedestal base in brass-plated steel, which transitions into a central chrome-plated stem. A circular footrest made of chromed tubular steel with a geometric brace configuration adds both stability and an industrial accent to the overall composition. The seating elements include a curved backrest and circular seat, both upholstered in dark red imitation leather (vinyl) that exhibits subtle stitching detail and a gentle sheen, providing a warm contrast to the metallic structure.

The design’s modernist ethos is evident in the emphasis on curved lines and symmetrical balance. The rounded seat and backrest echo the circular base, establishing visual harmony throughout the piece. The stools show typical signs of vintage use, including light patina on the brass plating and minor wear to the vinyl upholstery. All six retain their original structure and upholstery.

Börje Johanson was a prominent Swedish designer active in the mid-20th century, recognized for his work in functional public and commercial seating. His designs emphasized clarity of form and a modernist aesthetic aligned with the contemporary interiors of the post-war period. Johanson Design, established in the 1950s, focused on contract and hospitality furniture, collaborating with numerous designers to produce pieces marked by refined materials and precise construction.

Each stool measures 37 cm wide, 45 cm deep, and 106 cm high (approximately 14.6 x 17.7 x 41.7 inches), with a seat height of 82 cm (32.3 inches).
