Information

This rare and large circular wall mirror is attributed to Axel Einar Hjorth and was produced by Bodafors in Sweden during the 1930s. It exemplifies Scandinavian Art Deco through its combination of material richness, geometric simplicity, and restrained ornamentation.

The frame is constructed from solid birch with a stained finish that accentuates the wood grain, imparting a deep, warm tonality. The birch exhibits a characteristic shimmering figure, created by varied grain directions and visual movement. Laminated construction is evident in the vertical joints and radial segments around the frame’s perimeter, indicating traditional cabinetmaking techniques and hand craftsmanship typical of early 20th-century production.

The design emphasizes a clean, round form consistent with Hjorth’s stylistic approach in the early 1930s, a period when he blended international Art Deco influences with Swedish functionalism. The frame’s depth and convex curvature give the mirror a sculptural presence, while the original glass remains flush within the interior edge. The mirror glass is intact with minor aging and light surface wear. The back is solid and professionally finished for wall mounting.

Axel Einar Hjorth (1888–1959) was a prominent Swedish architect and designer renowned for his furniture produced for Nordiska Kompaniet and Bodafors. His work from the 1920s to 1930s integrated neoclassical elements, international modernism, and rustic motifs, evolving toward architectural simplicity and material richness. This mirror, attributed to his period at Bodafors, reflects that synthesis.

The mirror measures 98.5 cm in diameter and 5 cm in depth (approximately 38.8 x 2 inches). It remains in very good original condition with minor surface marks and patina appropriate to its age.
