Fetish sculpture

This traditional African power figure, known as a Nkisi Nkondi or fetish sculpture, originates from Central Africa and is closely associated with the Kongo peoples. It is carved from wood and features numerous hand-forged iron nails embedded across its surface, which are essential to its ritual and spiritual significance.

The figure stands upright with one arm raised—a gesture commonly interpreted as a symbol of authority or invocation. The facial features are strongly defined, with an open mouth displaying prominent teeth and an intense forward gaze. Traces of polychrome pigments in red, white, and black remain visible on the face and head, suggesting symbolic or ritual decoration. The body is densely studded with nails and metal fragments, each traditionally representing a vow, oath, or spiritual plea. A cavity in the abdomen, often sealed with resin or other materials, would house ritual substances or charms that activate the figure’s spiritual power.

The surface condition shows considerable wear, oxidation of metal elements, and encrustation typical of prolonged ritual use. The layered, uneven patina indicates authentic ceremonial handling rather than being a modern reproduction.

Nkisi Nkondi figures function as spiritual tools used by ritual specialists (nganga) to invoke protective spirits, administer justice, heal, or enforce agreements. The act of driving nails into the figure activates its power to witness vows, punish wrongdoers, or effect cures. These figures are central to Kongo cosmology and were traditionally communal objects integral to social and spiritual order.

Measuring 19 cm wide, 13.5 cm deep, and 41.5 cm high (approximately 7.5 x 5.3 x 16.3 inches), the sculpture remains structurally stable with all original components intact, exhibiting good condition relative to its age and ritual use.
