Fog & Mørup ceiling lamp
This ceiling lamp was produced by Fog & Mørup in Denmark during the 1940s and exemplifies early mid-century Scandinavian lighting design. The fixture is constructed in brass with opaline glass shades, combining traditional craftsmanship with the formal clarity that would come to define postwar Danish modernism.
The chandelier features a central brass hub from which eight sweeping brass arms extend in a radial arrangement. Each arm arches gracefully outward and downward, terminating in a socket fitted with a softly flaring glass shade. The shades are crafted in opaline glass with a subtle matte finish, yielding a warm, diffused light when illuminated. The balance between the metallic structure and the frosted tones of the glass enhances the sculptural character of the lamp while maintaining a restrained and symmetrical overall form.
The brass surface displays a gentle patina, and there are minor signs of age and wear visible on the arms and canopy, consistent with careful use over several decades. The original suspension rod and canopy are preserved, contributing to the authenticity and continuity of the design.
Fog & Mørup was among Denmark’s most influential lighting manufacturers throughout the 20th century. Known for collaborations with leading designers, the company played a crucial role in the development of modern Danish lighting aesthetics. This piece, dating from the early phase of the company’s modernist production, reflects a transitional style between Art Deco and the emerging Scandinavian functionalism, with an emphasis on material quality and elegance of line.
The condition is good vintage, with light wear and small imperfections that reflect the lamp’s age and preserve its historical integrity.
The dimensions are 60 cm in diameter and 69 cm in height, which translates to approximately 23.6 inches in diameter and 27.2 inches in height.
