Information

A very rare and exceptionally large ceiling lamp, model T-261/20, designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB in Markaryd, Sweden, during the 1950s. Measuring approximately 510 cm in length, 48 cm in width and 105 cm in height (200.8 x 18.9 x 41.3 inches), the fixture was conceived on an architectural scale and is distinguished by its unusually elongated, strictly linear construction.

The lamp is constructed predominantly from brass, with a long rectangular central beam carrying twenty cylindrical light housings arranged rhythmically along both sides. Each housing projects laterally from the beam on a short rectangular support, creating two parallel rows when the fixture is viewed from below. The cylinders contain individual light sources and are fitted with their original white plastic grid diffusers. These cellular diffusers conceal the bulbs from direct view while breaking the emitted light into a regular geometric pattern. When illuminated, the combination produces a warm, downward-directed light, with the golden brass surfaces further reflecting and modulating the illumination.

The composition is based on a deliberate contrast between elementary geometries: the strong horizontal line of the rectangular beam, the circular form of the lamp housings and the thin vertical suspension rods. Five brass suspension assemblies distribute the considerable length of the fixture and visually divide it into repeated sections. Cylindrical ceiling elements correspond formally with the light housings below, giving the suspension system an integrated rather than purely technical character. The extreme horizontal proportion and repeated modules create an almost architectural rhythm, particularly evident when the lamp is viewed along its longitudinal axis.

Hans-Agne Jakobsson was a Swedish interior architect and lighting designer whose work became an important part of Scandinavian lighting design during the postwar period. After working professionally within Swedish design and manufacturing, he established Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB in Markaryd in 1951. His lighting designs explored both the optical qualities of artificial light and the characteristics of materials such as brass, copper, glass, wood and textiles. Rather than treating the bulb as the principal visual element, many of his designs employ screens, reflectors, perforations or diffusers to control glare and determine how light is distributed into an interior.

Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB developed into a significant Swedish lighting manufacturer, producing a broad range of domestic and architectural fixtures from its facilities in Markaryd. The company’s production combined industrial manufacturing methods with the material sensibility associated with mid-century Scandinavian design. Brass was particularly well suited to Jakobsson’s approach: its reflective surface interacts with the light source while developing a natural patina with age. The manufacturer’s label visible inside one of the cylindrical housings identifies Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB, Markaryd, Sweden, together with the model designation T 261/20.

Dating from the 1950s, the T-261/20 reflects the period’s movement toward modularity, serial repetition and increasingly architectural forms of interior lighting. Its long beam and repeated individual sources function less like a conventional centralized chandelier and more like a suspended lighting system. The design combines Scandinavian modernism with a distinctly functionalist approach, while the extensive use of brass introduces a warmer material character than the painted steel and aluminium frequently associated with strictly industrial lighting.

The lamp remains in good vintage condition. The brass retains a warm golden tone with localized oxidation, surface marks, minor scratches and variations in patina consistent with age and previous use. The original white plastic grid diffusers are retained and provide an important part of both the optical construction and the period character of the fixture.
