Börje Johanson bar stools

This is a set of three bar stools, model Classic, designed by Börje Johanson and produced by Johanson Design in Markaryd, Sweden, during the 1960s. The stools represent a sculptural interpretation of Scandinavian modernism, characterized by the use of pure geometric forms, refined proportions, and material contrast. Each stool features a circular seat upholstered in dark brown leather, supported by a brass-plated steel structure consisting of a central column, integrated circular footrest, and flared trumpet base.

The leather upholstery is smoothly padded and exhibits a uniform dark chocolate tone with a soft luster. It shows minor wear consistent with age, with light creases and a naturally developed patina. The brass-plated frame reflects the light with a warm golden sheen, slightly softened by surface oxidation and fine abrasions, which contribute to the vintage character of the piece. The integrated footrest is both functional and visually balancing, echoing the circular motif found in the seat and base.

Börje Johanson was a Swedish designer active in the mid-20th century, best known for his contributions to the development of modernist seating with both functional and aesthetic innovation. Johanson Design, founded in the 1950s, remains a prominent Swedish manufacturer of seating and interior furnishings and has consistently focused on high-quality materials, ergonomics, and clean Scandinavian design language.

These stools are in good vintage condition, showing small signs of usage and mild patina across both leather and metal components. The construction remains stable and suitable for use, with the brass bases displaying only minor age-related wear, especially near the footrests.

Each stool measures 36 cm in diameter and 76 cm in height, which corresponds to approximately 14.2 inches wide and 29.9 inches high.
