Poul Henningsen floor lamp
This is a rare and highly distinctive floor lamp model known as “The Question Mark” designed by Danish architect and lighting innovator Poul Henningsen. Produced by Louis Poulsen in the 1930s, the piece showcases an early example of Henningsen’s work with tiered shade geometry and optical glare reduction. The lamp is constructed in bronze-patinated brass with its original amber-colored glass shade set, and it bears the stamped marking “Patented” on the upper reflector assembly, affirming its authenticity and origin.
The silhouette is defined by the upward-bending, fluidly curved arm that culminates in a characteristic question mark shape, lending the lamp both its nickname and its sculptural presence. The adjustable upper arm is fitted with a knurled brass lever, enabling rotation or tilt of the shade cluster for directional lighting. The stepped, three-shade configuration consists of graduated circular elements in amber-colored opal glass, designed to evenly diffuse light and minimize direct glare—hallmarks of Henningsen’s luminance theories.
The materials display signs of use consistent with age, including surface wear, oxidation, and a warm, developed patina on the brass structure. The amber glass shades are in well-preserved condition, with subtle tonal variations that become pronounced when the lamp is illuminated, enhancing the atmospheric quality of the light.
Poul Henningsen (1894–1967), commonly referred to as PH, is recognized as one of Denmark’s most influential lighting designers. Working with Louis Poulsen throughout much of his career, Henningsen developed a scientific approach to lighting in response to the transition from gas to electric light. His multi-shade lamps became a standard in Scandinavian design for their functionalism, visual comfort, and expressive form. “The Question Mark” floor lamp is among his rarer early designs and reflects a blend of sculptural elegance and pioneering optical design.
Louis Poulsen, founded in 1874, established itself as a key manufacturer of modern lighting design in the 20th century, in part through its close and long-lasting collaboration with Henningsen. Their production helped popularize the values of Scandinavian modernism: clean lines, technical integrity, and harmonious light diffusion.
The lamp stands 144 cm in height, with a width of 29 cm and a depth of 37 cm, corresponding to approximately 56.7 inches high, 11.4 inches wide, and 14.6 inches deep.
