Information

This rare and possibly unique modernist grandfather clock was produced during the 1930s or 1940s and combines a refined use of materials with the precision of German horology. The case is executed in steel with glass panels on all sides, allowing full visibility of the inner workings. Brass elements, including the circular dial, pendulum, and twin cylindrical weights, provide a striking contrast to the cool industrial tones of the steel frame. The clock rests on a distinctive cross-shaped steel base, which contributes to both stability and an architectural presence.

The clock is fitted with a Junghans clockwork, model P112, a well-regarded German mechanism known for its reliability and accuracy. Junghans, founded in 1861 in Schramberg, Germany, became one of the largest clock manufacturers in the world and played a significant role in advancing clockmaking technology during the early to mid-20th century. The P112 movement features a chain-driven weight mechanism that powers both the timekeeping and striking functions, with visible gears, chains, and pendulum that emphasize its mechanical sophistication.

The minimalist dial is executed in brushed brass with simple white linear hour markers and slender hands, reflecting the modernist tendency toward reduction and clarity. The geometric steel casing with its transparent sides underlines a functionalist aesthetic, highlighting mechanical parts rather than concealing them. This approach resonates with both early Bauhaus ideals and later Scandinavian mid-century design, where structural honesty and material expression were central values.

The clock remains in good vintage condition, with natural patina to the brass and steel consistent with its age. A small damage to the glass is visible on the left side, though this does not detract from the overall stability or readability of the piece. Its preserved state emphasizes its historical authenticity while demonstrating careful use over time.
