Sylvia Stave attrib. jar
This jar in pewter is attributed to Sylvia Stave and was produced by C.G. Hallberg in 1938. It has a cylindrical form with a slightly domed lid topped by a sculptural finial in the shape of a stylized cluster of berries or fruit, giving the piece a decorative yet restrained character. The surface is adorned with a linear banding near the top and bottom edges and features an embossed motif of a sailing ship in full rig, rendered in low relief, which adds a narrative and maritime touch to the otherwise minimal design.
The jar is in good condition with visible signs of age and patina, consistent with use over time. The pewter has developed a soft, matte finish that is characteristic of the material, enhancing its vintage presence. The craftsmanship is refined, with clean edges and carefully detailed ornamentation, representative of Swedish pewter work from the late 1930s.
Sylvia Stave was one of Sweden’s most important metal designers of the early 20th century, known for her modernist approach and work for C.G. Hallberg, one of Sweden’s leading producers of silver and pewter objects. Her designs often combined geometric forms with subtle decoration, aligning with the ideals of functionalism and the Swedish Grace movement of the interwar period. This jar reflects that balance of function and form, merging utilitarian purpose with elegant design.
