Arne Norell sofa
This rare two-seat sofa, model Inca, was designed by Arne Norell in the 1960s and produced by Arne Norell AB in Sweden. The frame is executed in dark-stained beech, a robust and finely grained hardwood, paired with brass fittings that provide both strength and visual contrast. The seat and back cushions are upholstered in dark brown leather with a subtle reddish tone, secured with visible buckled straps that emphasize the handcrafted detailing. The leather has developed a rich patina with areas of wear, consistent with age and use, contributing to its authenticity and historical character.
The Inca model exemplifies Norell’s interest in modular, easily assembled furniture that combines traditional materials with modern construction principles. The sofa’s design is characterized by its exposed structural elements, where the wooden frame remains clearly visible, while the cushions rest in a suspended position. The generous upholstery ensures comfort, while the leather straps and brass hardware highlight the technical precision of the design. The slightly reclined back and deep seat make the model particularly suited for relaxation, reflecting Norell’s ability to merge functionalism with casual elegance.
Arne Norell (1917–1971) was a Swedish furniture designer whose work became internationally recognized during the post-war decades. He founded Arne Norell AB in 1954, where many of his best-known models, including the Inca, Ari, and Ilona, were produced. Norell’s designs are often praised for their strong material presence, innovative use of strapping systems, and balance between comfort and structure. His work is firmly situated within Scandinavian mid-century design, yet it also shows an affinity with Brazilian modernism, particularly in the use of leather and exposed wooden frames.
This example remains in good vintage condition, structurally sound and with the kind of patina expected from leather that has aged naturally over decades. The combination of beech, leather, and brass gives the piece a warm, tactile presence that underscores its status as a mid-century Scandinavian classic.
