Information

The 3-seat sofa model Ilona, designed by Arne Norell and produced by Arne Norell AB in Aneby, Sweden, exemplifies the designer’s celebrated approach to modular construction, high-quality materials, and tactile richness. Introduced in the latter part of the 20th century, the Ilona reflects Norell’s ability to merge structural clarity with inviting, textural comfort—a hallmark of Scandinavian modernism.

The sofa is constructed with a robust frame made from dark-stained beech, finished to highlight the wood’s subtle grain while maintaining a smooth, even tone. The frame’s design features squared profiles and a low, grounded stance, which support the suspended seat and back cushions. Leather support straps stretch across the frame, holding the cushions in place while providing visual and functional contrast. These straps are fitted with brass fasteners and buckles, adding both artisanal detailing and structural integrity. The brass elements have developed a soft, golden patina, enriching the overall palette of the piece.

The standout feature of this example is the original upholstery—William Morris’s Golden Lily fabric—an Arts and Crafts design that adds historic depth and decorative complexity to the otherwise restrained form. The densely patterned textile features intertwining floral and botanical motifs in tones of ochre, orange, green, and gold set against a black ground. The fabric introduces a warm, expressive visual layer that complements the dark wood and brass, and speaks to Norell’s occasional interest in blending modernist frames with richly traditional textiles.

Comfort is emphasized through generous cushioning, with deep seat pads and high, loose back cushions that allow for relaxed seating while maintaining upright support. The cushions remain in excellent condition, and the original fabric shows minimal fading or wear, with the colors still vivid and the textile intact.

Condition overall is excellent vintage. The beechwood frame exhibits only minor surface marks consistent with age, and the structural joints remain tight. The leather straps are supple and undamaged, fully functional in supporting the seating structure. The brass elements are visually unified through natural aging, with no corrosion or damage.

Arne Norell (1917–1971) was a Swedish designer known for combining the comfort and elegance of traditional materials—leather, wood, brass—with the relaxed forms of modernist seating. The Ilona sofa is a prime example of this synthesis, offering architectural discipline with decorative richness.
