Arne Norell sofas
This pair of 3-seat sofas, model Ilona, was designed by Arne Norell and produced by Arne Norell AB in Aneby, Sweden. Designed during the mid-20th century, the Ilona model reflects the Swedish designer’s signature approach—emphasizing material contrast, structural clarity, and luxurious comfort. The pieces are exemplary of Scandinavian modernism, with a combination of craftsmanship and casual elegance that characterizes Norell’s body of work.
The frame is constructed from dark-stained beech wood, shaped into a rectilinear form that defines the sofa’s structure. The frame is open and visible from all sides, offering a clear view of the supporting architecture. Each sofa rests on four solid wood legs integrated into the lower frame, reinforcing the robust yet refined construction. The exposed frame supports the seat and back components while contributing to the overall lightness and geometric clarity of the design.
Side panels are made from thick black leather, attached to the frame with adjustable brass buckles and straps. This detail introduces a sense of craftsmanship and material tactility, reminiscent of saddle leather or campaign furniture. The brass fittings, now aged with patina, provide a subtle metallic contrast and underscore the artisanal quality of the design.
The seat and back cushions are upholstered in the original fabric—a bold botanical textile in a palette of orange, black, cream, and brown. The print consists of stylized leaf and floral motifs, offering a lively counterpoint to the otherwise neutral and rugged structure. The cushions are generously proportioned and deeply padded, softening the angular frame and contributing to the overall comfort of the sofas. However, the upholstery exhibits visible wear from age and use, and full reupholstering is recommended. This presents an opportunity for the next owner to personalize the pieces while preserving the integrity of the original frame and leather detailing.
Structurally, both sofas are in good vintage condition. The wood is stable with only minor signs of use, and the leather shows natural wear and patina appropriate for its age. The brass hardware has aged gracefully, enhancing the pieces’ character and historical authenticity.
Arne Norell (1917–1971) was a prominent Swedish designer known for his innovative seating designs that often combined wood, leather, and metal. His work is celebrated for merging aesthetic boldness with deep comfort and functionality. The Ilona model encapsulates this ethos, balancing structural clarity with inviting softness and material richness.
Each sofa measures 220 cm in length, 80 cm in depth, 74 cm in height, with a seat height of 38 cm (86.6 x 31.5 x 29.1 inches, seat height 15 inches). As a pair, these sofas represent a rare opportunity to acquire original Arne Norell designs with all major structural elements intact, ready for careful restoration and integration into modern or eclectic interiors.
