Axel Larsson cabinet
This rare cabinet with integrated desk was designed by Axel Larsson in the 1950s and produced by Bodafors in Sweden. It demonstrates the designer’s refined sense of proportion and versatility, merging storage and workspace into a compact freestanding unit.
The cabinet is executed in mahogany with a warm, reddish tone and straight grain pattern, complemented by a beech frame that provides lightness and structural clarity. The piece is elevated on squared legs with crossbars, creating stability while maintaining an open, airy character. The upper section features a fall-front desk surface that opens to reveal interior storage compartments and writing space. Below the desk, two drawers offer additional storage, emphasizing functional practicality within a restrained architectural form.
Axel Larsson was one of Sweden’s leading furniture designers during the mid-20th century, known for his work with Svenska Möbelfabrikerna Bodafors, where he created both bespoke commissions and serially produced furniture. His designs often combined modernist clarity with fine craftsmanship, aligning with the ideals of Swedish Grace and later Scandinavian modernism. The use of contrasting woods in this cabinet reflects Bodafors’ tradition of material refinement and their focus on durable, high-quality construction.
This example is in good vintage condition, with small signs of use consistent with age. It has been completely restored, ensuring both structural stability and preservation of its original character. The finish highlights the natural beauty of the mahogany and beech, while the overall form remains true to Larsson’s vision of timeless functionality.
