Information

This very rare pair of easy chairs, model Croissant, was designed by Illum Wikkelsø and produced by Holger Christiansen in Denmark during the 1950s. The chairs are executed in rosewood with original red and cognac brown leather upholstery. The voluminous, segmented form gives each chair a sculptural presence while maintaining the characteristic softness and comfort that define Wikkelsø’s work.

The Croissant model takes its name from its distinctive rounded shape and deep, channelled upholstery that resembles the layered curves of a croissant. The generous proportions, low seat, and enveloping backrest create a strong sense of comfort and organic flow. The solid rosewood frame elevates the form both literally and visually, introducing an elegant contrast between the rich wooden structure and the supple, aged leather. The patina of the leather displays natural tonal variations ranging from warm cognac to deeper red, giving the pair a refined, authentic character.

Illum Wikkelsø (1919–1999) was one of Denmark’s foremost mid-century designers, known for his ability to merge sculptural aesthetics with ergonomic precision. Trained as a cabinetmaker, Wikkelsø emphasized craftsmanship, natural materials, and human comfort in his designs. His work often blurs the boundary between furniture and sculpture, resulting in pieces that are as expressive as they are functional.

Produced by Holger Christiansen, a manufacturer recognized for high-quality collaborations with leading Danish designers, these chairs exemplify the Scandinavian approach to modernism: organic forms, exceptional craftsmanship, and an enduring focus on usability.

The chairs remain in excellent vintage condition, with signs of use consistent with age and a beautiful patina that enhances the natural richness of the materials. The leather surfaces are supple, and the structure is stable and well-preserved.
