Axel Einar Hjorth coffee table
Rare coffee table model Corall, designed by Axel Einar Hjorth and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet, Sweden, in 1934. This model belongs to Hjorth’s exclusive series of modernist furniture designed for NK’s luxury clientele, combining architectural clarity with artisanal precision.
The circular tabletop is made of birch and sycamore, arranged in an alternating chevron veneer pattern that creates a rhythmic geometric surface. The top is framed with a narrow inlaid border that emphasizes the table’s circular outline. The base consists of a cylindrical apron supported by six rounded solid legs, all executed in dark-stained birch, creating a strong contrast with the light tone of the top.
Axel Einar Hjorth (1888–1959) was head designer at Nordiska Kompaniet from 1927 to 1938. His work during this period spanned from strict functionalism to highly decorative limited-production pieces such as this one, often produced for NK’s department of exclusive commissions. The model Corall exemplifies his sophisticated balance of proportion, material, and craftsmanship.
The table is in good vintage condition with minor wear and patina consistent with age and use. The NK metal label and serial number are preserved underneath.
