Information

This rare height-adjustable ceiling lamp was designed by Carl-Axel Acking and produced by Bröderna Malmströms Metallvarufabrik in Sweden during the 1940s. Executed entirely in brass, the lamp demonstrates Acking’s refined understanding of both form and function. The material has developed a rich, naturally aged patina, highlighting its vintage character while preserving the original warm golden hue of the metal.

The lamp features three perforated hemispherical shades, each oriented outward from a central body, connected through elegantly curved brass arms. The perforations in the shades create a soft diffusion of light, producing a warm and ambient illumination while giving the piece a delicate and technically sophisticated appearance. The structure is balanced by a counterweight mechanism that allows the height to be adjusted with precision, a characteristic design feature in Acking’s lighting. The pulley and weight are executed in brass with wooden details, combining industrial precision with handcrafted elements.

Carl-Axel Acking (1910–2001) was one of Sweden’s most versatile architects and designers, active across furniture, lighting, and interior design. His work often emphasized practical functionality paired with elegant geometry and a restrained modernist aesthetic. This lamp is a strong example of Swedish mid-century design, combining mechanical ingenuity with sculptural form and fine craftsmanship.

The lamp remains in good vintage condition, showing signs of use and a consistent patina that enhances its depth and authenticity. The brass surface displays light wear, appropriate for its age, and the mechanical components are intact and functional.

Dimensions: diameter 70 cm and height adjustable from 107 to 150 cm, corresponding to approximately 27.6 inches in diameter and 42.1 to 59.1 inches in height.
