Information

This rare set of twelve dining chairs was designed by Ole Wanscher and produced by the renowned cabinetmaker A.J. Iversen in Denmark in 1942. The chairs are a fine example of Wanscher’s refined classicism, merging traditional craftsmanship with a modern Scandinavian sensibility. His designs often referenced historical forms, yet were reinterpreted with architectural precision and an understated elegance that has become characteristic of his oeuvre.

Executed in rosewood, the chairs display the exceptional quality of both material and joinery typical of Iversen’s workshop. The backrests feature a distinctive double X-lattice design—an element that reflects neoclassical influences while maintaining a light and open visual character. The slightly curved back and rear legs contribute to a graceful, balanced silhouette, ensuring both visual harmony and comfort.

The seats are upholstered in the original black horsehair fabric with black leather piping, demonstrating the original luxurious specification chosen for these pieces. The texture of the upholstery complements the deep reddish-brown tones and complex grain patterns of the rosewood, creating a subtle yet rich contrast.

Each chair bears the Illums Bolighus label, indicating their distribution through Copenhagen’s leading design retailer, which was central to the promotion of Danish modern furniture in the mid-20th century. The set remains in excellent vintage condition with minor signs of age and use, preserving a fine patina that enhances the natural beauty of the wood.

This set exemplifies the craftsmanship and aesthetic balance that define Danish cabinetmaking of the 1940s—functional elegance, perfect proportions, and enduring quality.

Dimensions: 50 × 52 × 85 cm (19.7 × 20.5 × 33.5 inches), seat height 44 cm (17.3 inches).
